Bourque: “Now is the time for Canada to help!”
Pierre Bourque of www.bourque.org has posted the following on his site:
Bourque: “Now Is Time For Canada To Help !”
A personal message from Pierre: “Folks, you’ve been following the terribly destructive effect of Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds, likely thousands, of people have died. Hundreds of thousands have been devastated, they’ve lost everything. Millions have been affected in one way or another. As tragic news pours in from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and elsewhere in the American south, it seems incredible that the Government of Canada and various Provincial Governments have not stepped up to offer aid wherever/however they can. Not a peep, zip. “I don’t know, that’s not my department, I’m on holidays”, joked one Ontario Cabinet minister encountered by Bourque at an Ottawa restaurant early this afternoon. Come again, Mr. “Honourable” ? Is that how his American counterparts reacted when the devastating ice storm wreaked havoc through Ontario and Quebec back in 1998 ? … Let me be the first in this country to publicly ask the Prime Minister and Provincial Premiers to publicly offer up our collective help. Time to belly up to the bar, boys. Time to pour forth the milk of human kindness. Send in food, send in water cleaning machines, send in our military, send in a couple of hundred 2-seater Sea Doos to help save people from their rooftops … Whatever you need to do, do it now, do it while it can make a difference, do it while it can save lives … And one last thing, this a request to my readers, please spread the word, get the message out far and wide, shout it loud, talk to your MP or MPP, call the PMO (613) 992-4211, email the PM, tell your elected official that we need to help and we need to do it now.…
Still working on the site updates
Today, I spent most of the day watching 24… actually watched about 4 hours of it.
After that, I went to work on my blog. Since MT is now running 3.2 and it is vastly different from 3.15, I have spent most of my time just trying to figure it all out again. But, I did get some stuff done today. I have been able to get OpenID and LiveJournal logins working to comment on my site. This is a feature that will arrive on my public site when I am done all my redesigning which means it will be awhile but it is coming. …
Wait a Second!!!! What is this
From The Manitoban:
Missing computers will return this fall
Students who rely on library computers should not be dismayed by the bright orange signs in libraries: the computers have been temporarily taken away to bring them up to speed for the high demand expected in the fall.
Susan Miller, the associate director of Information Services and Systems, said that the temporary removal is for the better.
“It’s just that we’ve had to remove computers that didn’t meet the security standards of the university because they were old. We have received funds now to replace those computers, and they will be in this fall, [but] not at the beginning of term, because we can’t get them in that fast,” said Miller.
The administration has provided money to upgrade the existing computer service, although no more additional computers will be added.
However, Miller noted, with the ever-increasing wireless capability on campus, any number of personal computers can now be used in five libraries. Additional libraries may soon be equipped with wireless technology.
WHAT – NO NEW COMPUTERS???????? I THOUGHT THAT $150 per student TECH FEE WAS GOING TO BE PUT INTO TECH!!!!!
Yeah, that is right, the TECH FEE is just a CASH GRAB! …
A Good Letter to the Editor of the Manitoban
Christen Roos, the UMSU Councillor representing students with disabilities as written a good letter to the editor which is printed in the current edition of The Manitoban
Putting pressure on the government
There have been some headlines in the Manitoban regarding the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. In the last issue, an editor raised concern over the recent matter regarding the ancillary fee increase, and how UMSU is unable to effectively represent students on this matter (“Who will speak up for students now?†20/07/2005). What should be noted is that originally the fees were going to be increased by $465, but, because of negotiations and advocating for the students, the fees were dropped to $150. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the fees reduced to zero, but there is a big difference between those two numbers, which was no doubt in part due to the pressure students put on the government and the administration. To say that we had no role is far from the truth.
Rather than claiming that anything we try to do as students won’t help, getting involved by educating ourselves on the issues and encouraging our representatives in government to increase funding and do what’s right for students seems like a much better route in dealing with the ancillary fee issue.
One would be hard-pressed to believe that the government would have just gone ahead and decreased the fees by providing our institution with an influx of money (something the students’ union has been calling for over the last year) had it not been for student pressure.…

The New Conservative Party of Canada Ads
The Conservative Party of Canada has launched new ads today.
There are four ads:
Health Care
This ad had potential and the Tories have blown it. It starts well.
Rona Ambrose MP says to Peter Mackay: “Peter you know waiting times for surgery used to be 9 weeks, now it is 4 months.” Mackay responds: “And yet the Liberals say that their fixing health care”
A great start. They have told me that Health Care has got worse under the Liberals. Now you have to tell me what you are going to do to improve it… I am interested in hearing how…. Instead the Conversatives blow it now.
Ambrose replies: “A drowning man will say anything.”
You have to be kidding me… that is how … what does that have to do with anything!!! I guess the Conservatives love reinforcing a negative childish image of politics. Was that supposed to make me laugh????? It did not, just turned me off of the rest of the ad.
Now we finally have an appearance by Harper: “You know its funny because the public health system is the only one most Canadians have ever used. Its the only one my family’s ever used. We’ve just got to make it work.”
This is good.. I am listening again… what are you going to do … .take it away:
Ambrose: “The Goal is to make sure every family .. . ” interrupts McKay: “and regular families, not just rich families” back to Ambrose: “get the quality health care they need.”
Harper: “Well that’s the plan and its time Canadian knew it.”
Voice-over: “Stand Up for Canada”
The ad had potential but the Conservatives do not say what they are going to do. …
The Confusion with UMSU fees
I have been listening on the blogosphere as UMSU members vent their confusion and frustration about the mystery $5 UMSU fee.
The mystery fee is actually a $5 increase to UMSU fees that was passed by UMSU Council in March. The increase is a reflection of the increased cost of event insurance that UMSU has to pay for all student groups on campus. Insurance rates have skyrocketed since 2001 yet UMSU fees had remained the same. The choice that Council had to make was between having insurance and increase UMSU fees by $5 or no students events could occur that had alcohol served. Council debated this at length and every other alternative was explored. There was no other way that would not have hurt other UMSU services or would not have resulted in cuts to UMSU events. As such, Council tried to find other ways, took as long as we could to decide to increase fees, and because the decision was made at the end of last regular session the fee increase was put into the University registration fee system at the last minute resulting in the confusion that exists now.
In short, the $5 was passed by Council and it is entirely going to help cover the increased costs of insurance for student events.
Lastly, for the record I voted in favour of this increase after consulting my College Student Association and hearing there was very strong support for the continuation of student events on campus. …

When will your site on www.spcsa.ca be ready? I am waiting to see it! …
Smile vs Angry
I was showing a friend the search engine that I use on my site.
I decided that I would pick a random word: “smile”
I received no results for smile
I then put in “angry”
I got 6 hits for that.
I have concluded that I need to smile more often.
I will be smiling in two weeks when I am in Guelph with all my friends at Moo U! …
