If you were about to say have an open academic debate and welcome student opinion, you be wrong!
You BAN them from the Student Union and you launch a full-out assault against the student by abusing the harassment process and accusing the student of harassment against the Student Union.
This is the case for myself and another student at Ryerson Student Union:
http://www.theeyeopener.com/storydetail.cfm?storyid=2739
Isn’t it nice to know that free speech and freedom of opinion are alive and well on our campuses. My sin, trying to have a vote to ban corporate gifts to the MSU.

Student Union Executives – when they do not like you or your ideas what do they do?
UMSU – More Action on the Tuition File
A bit of a busy day for me so far….. so I am just cutting and pasting from the UMSU site to get the word out. Amazing, here at McMaster, the MSU did not opposed the 4.5 – 8 percent tuition hikes imposed on all students. Compare this to UMSU where UMSU is working hard and engaging students to work against tuition hikes. Of course, it is standard practice at UMSU to work for students.
From the UMSU site:
The University of Manitoba Board of Governors voted on May 23 in favour of increasing the international student differential fee to 180% (it was 100%, or double what other students pay, this past year)
The University claims that it is in a funding crisis, but the provincial government has increased funding for the U of M by 7% for 2006-07 ($12 million) and has committed 5% increases for the following two years.
Many international students are now telling UMSU that they will not be able to complete their studies at the U of M, and it is unfortunate that the university has taken such a drastic step that will negatively affect our entire province.
Get involved with the Fee Watch Campaign. Come to a meeting on Monday May 29 at 5pm in the UMSU Council Chambers to decide what our next step should be.

Student Newspapers I Read – The Peak (Simon Fraser University)
Here is another one of my favorites: The Peak at Simon Fraser University.
The stories in it are always well written and I always have the opportunity to think about what is being said to me in this paper. The Peak publishes weekly, yes weekly!, over the summer. Thankfully for me too, I was missing it for the two weeks it did not publish during exams.
Click the Image for a Larger Picture of the Cover

Unlike the Sil, they have a webpage that is updated and they put the PDF version online. You can read the PDF version here: The Peak (PDF) May 23, 2006
This week, I found the following stories to be worth spreadingt:
The “Thank You” and “Screw You” Column (Page 2 of the PDF)
Controversy swirls at the Douglas Students’ Union
The rest of the stories are very much local interest stories. It is a bit of a slow edition this time.
The Peak does have a good design and the txt msg column allows for easy interactivity with the readership. The Opinions page is normally very informative and intelligent.
Not only that, they do investigative reporting. They hold Student Unions accountable, imagine that. It was The Peak that broke the Douglas Student Union $200,000 loan from CFS scandal. You can read the Auditors Report that triggers all this here: http://www.douglasstudent.blogspot.com/
StudentUnion.ca is covering the story as well here.
Now, I had a link to StudentUnion.ca coverage of this story back in May. …
Call to Arms Everyone Out! (Repeat)
This is very important and I want it to be at the top of my blog hence the repeat.
The University of Manitoba BoG is about to try to imposed fee hikes of up to $460 again this year.
Last year we stopped them for the most part. We did get nailed with the $150 Tech Fee of which none of it was spent on Student Computing instead it went to a new mainframe to replace the old mainframe. The new mainframe is a bit of a joke in my opinion. The University had to remove the cap on VW’s because the new mainframe could not track VW’s. (I am glad there is no cap on VWs for the record) You can read my opinion on the fee here: http://www.joeycoleman.ca/archives/2005/08/27/wait_a_second_what_is_this.html
We need everyone to come out to the University of Manitoba BoG meeting next week. Put this on your blog, let your friends know… UMSU needs our help, lets give it!

Best Offense I was Convicted of by the University at the Request of the MSU Inc.
Tonight a bunch of friends and I got together. We met on campus then heading off campus for coffee. We made sure to not talk about anything MSU on campus since that is an offense for me to do.
While having coffee, we were talking about all the offenses I was convicted of by the University. We decided the best was abuse of telecommunications resources. One time (and only one time) I picked up the wrong phone in the MSU Office. It was a mistake in November, the MSU filed that along with over 2 dozen other charges against me.
Funny eh! The lesson here, do not pick up phones by mistake at McMaster University cause the MSU is watching. …

History of the Hamilton Street Railway and the Riot Act
I am researching on articulated buses right now as part of a presentation I am going to give soon.
Anyway, in a page about the History of the HSR it talks about a time when the Riot Act was read in Hamilton during a labour dispute in 1908. It said the Riot Act was read. Turns out it is the same Riot Act today. Sorta cool.. to me, and yes I am a nerd.
From Wikipedia the riot act is:
In Canada, the Riot Act has been incorporated in a modified form into ss. 32-33 and 64-69 of the Criminal Code. The proclamation is worded as follows:
Her Majesty the Queen charges and commands all persons being assembled immediately to disperse and peaceably to depart to their habitations or their lawful business, on pain of being guilty of an offence for which, on conviction, they may be sentenced to an imprisonment for life. God Save the Queen!…
Hamilton’s Lister Block
Today’s Spectator has another article about the Lister Block. It seems that it may be demolished and something new put in or not. Who knows?
http://www.thespec.com/pdfs/20060519/A2.pdf
Here is what I think should be done about the Lister Block and it is an opportunity for the MSU to be a leading student union in the country (I know, it is the MSU Inc., unless it involves some perk it is unlikely to happen) …
Surprise Hattip: Drew Mitchell, VP Finance MSU
I was on campus tonight at 2230EDT and saw that Drew Mitchell was putting in a late night working on getting the MSU Budget done. This is a bomb that was thrown into his laptop by the old VP Finance who did not do the budget. That is impressive work by Drew Mitchell and does deserve a hattip. …
StudentUnion.ca – Exposing More CFS Corruption
StudentUnion.ca’s editor has been doing an amazing job of following the trail and exposuring CFS’s corrupt practices.
Tonight he explodes the Canadian Conference of Student Associations incorporation by CFSers including Amanda Aziz, past president of UMSU. All I can say is that I am extremely disappointed. Amanda did an amazing job of getting rid of the corrupt clique that was running UMSU as a corporation and attacking students that were fighting for democratic reform. She was a leader of that movement.
http://www.studentunion.ca/2006/05/all-your-conference-are-belong-to-us.html
When one reads the bylaws of these new corporations, the undemocratic student crushing structure reminds me of the MSU Corporate bylaws. Absolutely disgusting.

MSU Code of Conduct
People have accused me of plenty of things of late cause the MSU Board of Directors and SRA House Leader have been engaged in a smear campaign against me. The latest battle was fought over SRA minutes from 2004-2005 that were hidden from MSU members. They have been posted. Remember that they are edited to make the MSU clique look good and people like Erin Robinson who called for accountability look bad. It is funny, I get the same treatment lol!
Anyway, the MSU clique has claimed they have no problem with accountability and are all for it. Yet they have stopped the Accountability Act. They also claimed this was the first time they had a Code of Conduct put forth and it was insulting to them.
Turns out as I suspected, it was not the first time and that was the reason that the minutes from 04/05 were hidden for so long.
I quote from the minutes of 20 Mar 05 at the SRA meeting:
10. MSU Board of Directors Code of Conduct
Moved by Robinson, seconded by Sarin that the SRA approve the MSU Board of Directors Code of Conduct.
Discussion
Robinson – had raised this issue earlier in the fall and this is to ensure that members of the Board are acting in the best interest of the Corporation. This has been adopted from other Boards. This will be attached to the full time employment policy and will be given as part of their employment packages.
Mohan – this was brought to a recent Board meeting but I have concerns about this coming from a current Board member.…
A UofM moment
I am working night shifts this week and keeping busy… decided to take a break and do some surfing.
Went to the UofM page and found this. I remember this cause I was in this residence for the filming. Sorta cool having two gyms in your residence building eh!
http://umanitoba.ca//about/movies/dance.shtml
This is a cool sport unique to UofM. If I am ever there in the winter, I am definitely going to take part!

MSU Update
I am still banned from all MSU space.
Students with Disabilities continue to hear nothing from the MSU in regards to the work that needs to be done to finalize some agreements that I worked on and got agreements sealed, they just are in the final steps. I would have finish them by now if it were not for the MSU punishing me for my politicial opinion.
The Executive Board of the MSU meant on Monday. I was speaking to an engineering student that was in attendance and from he recalled:
Representative Jones of Humanities promised to ask questions at EB about why the MSU failed to represent students at the BoG meetings. He did not ask any questions in regards to tuition prior to the Executive Board going into closed session removing the Engineering student who was observing from the room. He had a motion that the BoD was to report bi-weekly on what they were doing. It was watered down to monthly.
The EB tried to pass the budget but it was filled with errors and could not be passed.
The Executive continues to defy the SRA by keeping the budget a secret and hiding it from MSU associate members (fee paying full-time undergraduate students like myself are not full members of the MSU).
There was a question about what the Federal Budget meant for McMaster Students. According to the Eng student, the VP Finance did not go into enough detail to give a proper answer to that question. …
McMaster University Senate Meeting
I am at the Senate meeting. You are going to be surprised: three of the seven Executive we are currently paying have shown up…. very surprising. Actually, not too surprising. I publicly announced that this Senate meeting was occuring and that important business was on the agenda. Oh yeah, they finally do something after I give up trying to talk to them privately and go public.
