In early 2004 the same thing happened at Mount Allison university where, essentially, the president was fired for disagreeing with the Board over the future of the University. Due to non-disclosure agreements signed on all sides, though, the full story never came out. At a meeting of the Board about two years later, though, one of the Board members was heard to utter something along the lines of “Well if he wasn’t willing to toe our line then I guess we didn’t hire the right guy.”
That former president was invested into the Order of Canada a year later for his contributions to canadian education. He currently teaches human rights law at Dalhousie University.
Thanks W3!

Some theories, unsubstantiated in any way:
- He went outside the mandate he was given by the Board to solve the faculty strike before it happened. Of note: The Board of Governors has NOT ratified that contract yet.
- He got a better offer somewhere else, since he was making way down the list of Carleton Professors in terms of salary, nowhere near the top, unlike his predecessor, Rick Van Loon.
