I have been sitting on this for about two weeks and I am still rather frustrated.
McMaster University and the MSU are dragging their feet on fixing a major problem for students with disabilities. Let me be clear to both these parties. I will not stand by and allow students with disabilities to continue to be disadvantaged because of your agendas. We have collected the necessary evidence to take this to the Human Rights Tribunal. We know of the side deal made with one student this year, the student who was most vocal and promised to take both your parties to Tribunal. The rest of us put our faith in the negotiation process since an agreement had been reached and all we were waiting for was implementation.
We will not sit by another year, we will take the case to Tribunal. We have the evidence to prove that the side deal was made. (Not to worry, the student the deal was made with as lived up to their end of the bargain and denied it occurred) We have the minutes and I have recordings of members of the Executive Board admitting the deal was made and approved by the Executive Board in closed session. Not only is that unethical, the Executive Board does not have the power to make the deal. Regardless, by making the deal, the MSU no longer can use the same defense they did in the last Tribunal hearing.
It is up to the MSU and the University to solve this now! The only reason the Tribunal did not rule harshly against both parties was that both parties were able to claim they were working in good faith to fix the problem and it would be solved for this year. This year is done and it is not solved. To solve things for next year, you need to sit down now and fix it.
The ball is in your court. We, the students with disabilities looking for this problem to be solved, are watching and are prepared to act.

Oh dear. What happened, if you don’t mind me asking?
… i find this rather interesting.. as I am on executive board.. and recall nothing about a closed session regardng ‘side deals’.. and i have to say i would undoubtably not forget… first off cuz theyre “fun”. secondly cuz i specially file nething as juicy as a crooked side deal.. and mark it ‘MSU CORRUPTION’
Ummm…dude? Info? More? Develop story?
Basically…wha’ happen?
Yeah… most of your readers have no idea what you’re talking about.
This is about transferability for students with disabilities.
MAPS and the MSU agreed to allow transfer from MAPS to the MSU for all students with disabilities taking a full-time course load (12 units or more) last March. It also included limited transferability for all students between the MSU and MAPS in certain circumstances. As this was occurring a Human Rights case was being heard on the matter. The tribunal did not really rule against any party because progress was being made. I was involved, in part, in making the deal happen. It was approved by the SRA and then the University refused to support the deal. Nothing stopped the MSU from moving forward. The MSU used the excuse they could not do transfers without the University on board.
They then proceeded to give MSU membership to one student with a disability but to no others. They denied they did this. I have the proof they did.
Now, at the last SRA meeting, the MSU Executive brought forth an “agreement” which was not what was agreed to. It was what the University wanted. The SRA rejected that and approved (AGAIN) the same agreement as last year.
I am making clear that the University and MSU need to stop playing games. It is time to fix this. I will not stand by this year. This was me giving a clear warning to both of them to get it together and not drag their feet again this year.
FINALLY I’m not the first one to bring sarcasm here. Could I see those files marked MSU CORRUPTION? I can come pick it up, how many empty trucks should I bring to load them in?
Replace “it” with “them.” Transistors are frying my brain right now.
even though you explained it, i still dont understand.
so they gave MSU membership to one MAPS student with disabilities. Did that person pay the membership fees? So all they were deficient was the 18 units?
If there are specific benefits that come with MSU membership for students with disabilities, I would support that agreement being made – whether or not they have 18 units or not.
I’m not that ‘au courant’ with MAPS issues, but if the MSU is willing to assist those students who ask for assistance, and they have a valid reason and the support of students, what wrong with it?
Who is this Danny V character and how do we know he actually exists?
The problem is that the “deal” was made in secret, and it was not offered to any other students with disabilities. The students that inquired to get the same “deal” were told no, that no such deal could be made or was made.
(Regrets on the delay publishing comments)
if this “deal” was made in secret.. and all parties are stating that it did not happen.. it is so amazing that you, joey coleman, has uncovered it… with your types of skills you really should be on like CSI or something.. you never cease to amaze me!

Who is this “Anonymous” character and how do we know he/she actually exists (when he/she put a name to the comment)?
That is a much better question.
